Annual Insurance Meeting

Nick Guarriello, Rich Popp, Tom Reedy and David Schumann met last week with representatives from FM Global Insurance for the Agency’s annual stewardship meeting. Discussion topics included a review of FMPA’s account and property risks.


 


HVAC Upgrade

A task group of FMPA staff members met last Wednesday to review the Statements of Qualifications from 10 engineering firms for services related to replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) at FMPA’s Orlando office. FMPA is seeking an engineering firm to serve as the owner’s representative during this process. The working group selected a short list of three firms that included Graef-USA Inc., SGM Engineering, Inc., and TLC Engineering for Architecture. The short-listed firms will be interviewed Jan. 8, 2013. Following the interviews, the firms will be ranked, and contract negotiations will begin with the top-ranked firm. Policy Maker Representatives

FMPA welcomes two new policy makers to the Agency’s Policy Makers Liaisons Committee. The Havana Town Council appointed Councilman Matt Thro to replace Councilman Veell Ross as Havana’s Policy Maker Liaison. Also, the Ocala City Council appointed Councilman Daniel Owen to replace Councilwoman Suzy Heinbockel as the city’s Policy Maker Liaison to FMPA. Contact: Mark McCain

Audit and Risk Oversight Committee

FMPA’s Audit and Risk Oversight Committee meets Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the Board room to discuss approval of the risk inventory update. The committee will also hear information items including, 1) 2012 power generation performance, 2) information technology annual report, 3) fuels market update, and 4) risk management policy reviews. Board of Directors

FMPA’s Board of Directors meets Thursday in the Board room at 10 a.m. or immediately following the Audit and Risk Oversight Committee meeting to discuss: 1) approval of renewing a contract with Swap Financial, 2) approval of ISDA agreement amendments’ swap modifications, and 3) approval of the Board officers’ recommendations and evaluations of FMPA’s General Manger and CEO and FMPA’s General Counsel. ARP Executive Committee

FMPA’s Purchasing Roundtable meets Thursday at 10 a.m. in the first floor conference room. The roundtable provides a forum for purchasing personnel to discuss work procedures, policies, industry changes, equipment and other topics of interest. Contact: Sharon Samuels

Audit and Risk Oversight Committee

FMPA’s Audit and Risk Oversight Committee meets Monday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. via conference call to conduct an exit interview with FMPA’s independent auditors, Purvis Gray & Company. The Committee will discuss the fiscal 2012 financial statements, Management Letter comments and management’s responses. Contact: Rich Popp


 


Excellence as a Supervisor

The first module of Excellence as a Supervisor is scheduled for Jan. 8 and Jan. 9 in FMPA’s Board room. This training program is available to FMPA members as part of the alliance between FMPA and Electric Cities of Georgia. The training is designed to provide supervisors or prospective supervisors with the skills necessary to be effective leaders. As of last Friday, 13 people from seven member cities are registered. Human Resources Roundtable

FMPA will host a Human Resources Roundtable on Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. in the Board room. The roundtable provides a forum for participants to discuss topics, such as benefits, recruiting, employee retention, training, policies and more. Groundman Certificate Program

FMPA’s lineworker training program with Electric Cities of Georgia (ECG) is accepting applications for the Groundman Certificate Program. The four-day workshop is scheduled for Feb. 5 through Feb. 8 at the Newnan Training Center in Newnan, Ga., and March 5 through March 8 at the Adel Training Center in Adel, Ga. Topics include: 1) basic electricity, 2) truck set-up, 3) rigging, knots and ropes, 4) pole setting, 5) electrical system overview, 6) bucket truck rescue and more. The program cost is $495. Energy Auditor Training Workshop

FMPA will host an Energy Auditor Training Workshop in FMPA’s Board room on Feb. 19. The workshop is designed for energy auditors, customer service representatives and utility personnel who provide customers with energy efficiency information. Discussion topics will include building envelope, HVAC, energy auditor tools and energy usage. The cost is $525. Contact: Sharon Samuels

Settlement Reached in Duke Energy Merger Investigations

North Carolina’s utilities regulators and Attoey General Roy Cooper announced settlements last Monday, ending their investigations into whether Duke Energy misled officials before its merger with Progress Energy. The settlement with state regulators includes an additional $25 million in promised savings to customers, which increases the total promised savings to $675 million over five years. Cooper’s settlement includes a requirement that Duke appoint a liaison to his office that gives him information on potential rate hikes sooner. The agreement also requires Duke to hire an independent company to survey all North Carolina customers about their rates and service. Duke will report back to Cooper’s office within a year on results and what it plans to do. The utilities commission had the authority to reverse its earlier approval allowing the merger with Progress. A unanimous vote by the commission ended that possibility.

 


NRECA Names proposed” rel=”nofollow”>http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-11-30/pdf/2012-28729.pdf>proposed revisions to its monitoring requirements and emissions limits for new coal- and oil-fired power plants under its Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS). The MATS rule, which was published in February, will require coal- and oil-fired power plants to reduce emissions of mercury and other toxic substances. The proposed revisions do not change the final emission limits for existing power plants. EPA projects that the proposed new limits will result in no significant change in costs, emission reductions or health benefits. The agency said on July 20 that it would reconsider its monitoring requirements and emissions limits for new coal-fired power plants under MATS. In addition to some minor technical corrections, EPA also proposed to revise and clarify requirements that apply during periods of startup and shutdown under MATS and startup and shutdown for particulate matter in the Utility New Source Performance Standards. EPA is accepting comments on the proposal until Dec. 31.
