INDUSTRY NEWS

House Committee Approves Repeal of Nuclear Cost Recovery

The Florida House Energy and Utilities Subcommittee approved a bill (HB 7167) last Thursday that would overtu a 2006 law and prevent electric utilities from charging customers for the development of nuclear plants. The bill is similar to a Senate version (SB 1472) requiring that federal licenses be obtained for nuclear plants before costs for land acquisition, planning and construction can be collected. HB 7167 places a moratorium on new requests for nuclear cost recovery. Both bills will most likely be heard this week in their next committees of reference and be ready for floor action shortly thereafter. Florida’s investor-owned utilities opposed the bills.
