Bushnell City Manager

The Bushnell City Council recently named Utilities Director Bruce Hickle as the next City Manager effective Aug. 1. He will replace Vince Ruano, who is retiring after more than three decades of service to the city. Bruce will maintain his position as utilities director, which he has held for the past 10 years, in addition to the city manager role.

 

Business Planning and Budget Committee

FMPA’s Business Planning and Budget Committee met last Friday for its first review of the Agency’s proposed fiscal 2014 budget. The Committee had been scheduled to meet next on May 15, but the Committee cancelled that meeting. Its next meeting is June 6 at 9:30 a.m. in Orlando for the second review of the Agency budget and its first review of project budgets. Contact: Mark Larson

 

Stock Island Generating Facility

Combustion Turbine Unit 1 at the Stock Island Generating Facility in Key West came back online April 20 after repairing damage when a bus bar conductor and a breaker bued in an electrical fire caused by a short circuit. Contact: David Schumann

 

3 Phase Times

FMPA’s Power Resources Division recently published the March 2013 edition of 3 Phase Times. This monthly report provides information about the All-Requirements Project’s (ARP) system peak, hourly loads, resource fuel mix, natural gas usage, natural gas pricing and more performance information. The report shows that in March, FMPA purchased 3,023 MWhs from the Florida Municipal Power Pool and sold 41,661 MWhs to the Pool, resulting in net sales of 38,638 MWhs. The short-term forecast estimated 53,013 MWhs of net purchases. The higher net sales were due to FMPA having a higher than expected amount of power generation available. Ruppel Re-appointed NNOG Chairman

Steve Ruppel, FMPA’s Contract Compliance Auditor, was re-appointed as chairman of the Nuclear Nonoperating Owners Group (NNOG) for his second consecutive term. Steve has been active in NNOG since 2002. NNOG’s mission is to enhance the ability of non-operating owners to manage their nuclear assets. The organization’s membership includes municipals, cooperatives and investor-owned utilities.

Jacksonville Beach Presentation 

Nick Guarriello will be in Jacksonville Beach on Wednesday for an All-Requirements 101 presentation for new city council members. Council members will lea about the All-Requirements Project, the value of community power and what FMPA is doing to become the lowest cost wholesale power provider in the state.

 

All-Requirements Project Weekly Load Statistics

The weekly update of the All-Requirements Project historical load graph has been posted on the Member Portal. The graph is updated through April 28. Contact: Jim Atz

COMING UP

 

Hazardous Waste Workshop

Time is running out to register for FMPA’s Hazardous Waste Workshop on May 9 at 9 a.m. in the Board room. State and federal regulations have strict requirements for handling hazardous waste materials, such as solvents, cleaners, paints and fluorescent light bulbs. Daniel Stoehr of Daniels Training Services will discuss the regulations and methods for managing these materials. Discussion topics will include: hazardous waste, used oil, waste storage, labeling and disposal training requirements, and emergency response procedures. FEMA Applicant’s Briefing and Managing Hurricane Response Workshop

FMPA and the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) are offering two workshops on May 15 in Orlando to assist members in preparing for hurricane season. FMPA has arranged for a representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to discuss FEMA’s disaster assistance reimbursement process. This program, called an Applicant’s Briefing, will be held at Nova Southeaste University in Orlando from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is free of charge. Immediately following the Applicant’s Briefing, FMEA is hosting a hands-on workshop from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nova where an instructor will facilitate a mock disaster response to a fictional hurricane strike. The cost of the response workshop is $90 and includes lunch. Human Resources Roundtable

FMPA will host a Human Resources Roundtable on May 22 at 10 a.m. in the first floor conference room. The roundtable provides a forum for participants to discuss topics such as benefits, recruiting, employee retention, training, policies and more. Energy Auditor Roundtable

Beaches Energy Services will host the semi-annual Energy Auditor Roundtable at Jacksonville Beach City Hall on May 23 at 10 a.m. The roundtable provides a forum for participants to discuss topics such as work procedures, equipment and materials, site-specific issues and industry changes. INDUSTRY NEWS

 

FPL’s Cape Canaveral Plant Now Online 

Florida Power & Light (FPL) said last Wednesday that its new Cape Canaveral Next Generation Clean Energy Center is complete and generating power. The $900 million natural gas facility is expected to reduce the rate of carbon emissions by 50%, according to FPL. The plant produces 1,200 MW, approximately double the capacity of the previous facility, which was taken offline in 2010.

 

Progress Energy Adopts Duke Energy Name

Progress Energy Florida will adopt the Duke Energy name starting Monday, according to company officials. At that time, a new Duke Energy logo will replace the Progress name on all trucks, signs and other company items. Duke completed its merger with Progress on July 2 in a $32 billion deal that made Duke the largest investor-owned electric utility in the United States. Progress also will file a Notice of Succession with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Monday to notify it of the name change.
