INDUSTRY NEWS

FPL to Demolish Port Everglades Plant

Florida Power & Light (FPL) on Tuesday will demolish the smokestacks of its oil-fired plant in Port Everglades to make room for a new $1.1 billion natural gas-fired plant scheduled to come online in 2016. This will be the third oil-buing power plant that FPL has razed in the past few years and replaced with gas-fired units. The Florida Public Service Commission in April 2012 unanimously approved FPL’s proposal to replace the oil- and gas-fired units with new combined-cycle units. FPL says the new plant will save customers $469 million through lower fuel costs. Customers will begin paying for the new Port Everglades Next Generation Energy Center once it begins commercial operation.
