INDUSTRY NEWS

FPL Rates May Rise 5% in January 2014

Florida Power & Light (FPL) released last Friday its estimate for customer bills in January 2014 as part of the utility’s annual filing of fuel cost projections with the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC). The monthly bill for FPL’s typical residential customer using 1,000 kWh per month is expected to increase in January by approximately 5%, or $5, to approximately $100. The requested increase is due primarily to the anticipated rise in fuel prices. Rates will be finalized later this year by the PSC. FPL’s base rates also will rise in mid-2014 when FPL’s new Riviera Beach plant goes into service as part of a previous approved rate case by the PSC.

Candidates Recommended to Goveor for PSC Appointments

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) Nominating Council announced a list of six nominees last Wednesday who will advance to the final stage of the commission’s selection process. The lists included sitting commissioners Ronald Brisé and Art Graham, whose terms expire in January 2014, Frank Stubbs III, Donald Polmann, James Baumstark and former lawmaker and Public Service Commissioner Ken Littlefield. Gov. Rick Scott has 30 days to make appointments to the two seats. If he doesn’t make appointments within that period, the PSC Nominating Council can make the appointments. The appointments will then require confirmation by the Florida Senate.
