PSC Approves Duke Nuclear Settlement

The Florida Public Service Commission approved a multibillion-dollar settlement with Duke Energy last Thursday regarding $5 billion in costs associated with the closed Crystal River nuclear power plant and the canceled Levy County nuclear power plant. Under the settlement, customers will pay up to $3.2 billion of the costs. Insurance will cover $835 million of the expenses, and Duke shareholders will pay the rest. Residential customers using 1,000 kWh per month will pay $5.62 starting in January, an increase of 89 cents. The charge could increase between 2015 and 2019, depending on additional costs associated with Crystal River. Duke expects to collect all it needs for the Levy County project by 2018.
