Americans’ Energy Use Increases 2.4% in 2013

Americans’ energy use increased 2.4% in 2013, with increases in renewable, fossil and nuclear energy use, the Department of Energy (DOE) said last Monday. The majority of energy used in 2013 went toward electricity generation, followed by transportation, industrial, residential and commercial energy. Petroleum was the main energy source (35.1%), followed by natural gas (26.6%) and coal (18%). Wind energy grew last year to represent 1.6% of U.S. energy. New wind farms and larger, more efficient turbines contributed to an 18% growth in output. Americans used 2.3% more natural gas in 2013 compared to 2012, due partly to a cold winter. Meanwhile, the recent shift from coal to gas reversed slightly, due in part to rising natural gas prices, DOE said. A https://flowcharts.llnl.gov/content/energy/energy_archive/energy_flow_2013/2013USEnergy.png>flowchart; illustrating U.S. energy usage last year is available on DOE’s website.
