Solar Panel Mandate Under Consideration in South Miami

A measure that would make rooftop solar panels mandatory on new residential homes, buildings and apartment complexes is under consideration in South Miami. The law would require that 175 square feet of solar panels be installed per 1,000 square feet of roof area. It is estimated that solar energy increases the home-building cost by 1%, though studies show that homeowners can recoup this cost in about 10 years. If the law goes into effect, South Miami will be the first city in Florida to make rooftop solar panels mandatory.
