FMPA Named One of Central Florida’s Healthiest Employers

FMPA was named last Friday by the Orlando Business Joual as one of Central Florida’s Healthiest Employers for 2013. The program recognizes organizations that are committed to creating a healthy workplace. The award utilizes an online assessment tool and measures wellness programming in six key categories: 1) culture and leadership commitment, 2) foundational components, 3) strategic planning, 4) communication and marketing, 5) programming and interventions, and 6) reporting and analysis. FMPA was ranked in the top five of all companies with two to 99 employees. Being “the company of choice for employees is part of the Board of Directors’ vision statement, so awards programs, such as this, bring recognition and credibility to FMPA’s total rewards package. FMPA’s Power Resources Division published the September 2013 edition of 3 Phase Times. This monthly report provides information about the All-Requirements Project’s (ARP) system peak, hourly loads, resource fuel mix, natural gas usage, natural gas pricing and more performance information. The report shows that in September, FMPA purchased 3,490 MWh from the Florida Municipal Power Pool and sold 92,516 MWh, resulting in net sales of 89,026 MWh. The short-term forecast estimated 9,571 MWh of net sales. The higher net sales were due to the economic dispatching of gas-fired generating units and the running of Stanton Unit 1 for water management. INDUSTRY NEWS

PSC Approves New Natural Gas Pipeline

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved last Thursday a request by Florida Power & Light (FPL) to build a third major natural gas pipeline, which would increase Florida’s capacity by 20%. The new pipeline would run from Alabama through the Florida peninsula and enable the state to tap more of the nation’s growing shale gas sources. FPL said the two current pipelines are full to capacity, so the new line is needed to accommodate the growing demand for natural gas transportation in Florida. The new pipeline is scheduled to come online in 2017 and projected to cost $3 billion. The project still must be approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
