INDUSTRY NEWS
Wholesale Power Prices Increase 16% in 2014
Wholesale on-peak power prices increased 16% or more in 2014 compared to 2013, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The EIA said in its Jan. 12 daily report, http://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.cfm?id=19531> style=font-family: ‘Georgia’,’serif’; color: windowtext;>Today in Energy, that the increase was due largely to increases in spot natural gas prices and by high energy demand caused by cold weather at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. Spot natural gas prices at the Henry Hub averaged $4.38 per MMBtu in 2014, a 17% increase from 2013. Prices at other major trading points increased 16% to 40%. Electricity prices in the Pacific Northwest were the lowest in the nation, increasing only 3%, EIA said. Spot gas prices in New York City reached $120 per MMBtu, an increase of $84. In Boston, spot gas prices reached $78 per MMBtu, an increase of $44. In Chicago, prices reached $34 per MMBtu, an increase of $29. Peak hourly spot electricity prices exceeded $518 per MWh in New England, and $190 per MWh in northe Illinois, EIA said. In January 2014, more than 10 million barrels of petroleum products were used to generate electricity in the United States, the highest amount since February 2007, EIA noted.
