INDUSTRY NEWS
FPL Requests Rate Decrease
Florida Power & Light (FPL) filed its updated fuel cost projections for 2015 with the Florida Public Service Commission and recommended that its electric rates be reduced beginning May 1. If approved, a residential customers using 1,000 kWh per month would pay $97.12, or $3 less than FPL’s current rates. Commercial electric customers would see decreases of 3% to 6%, depending on company size and rate class, according to FPL’s proposed rate schedules. FPL said the decrease is due to lower natural gas prices.
FPL Looks to Acquire then Shut Down Jacksonville Coal Plant
Florida Power & Light (FPL) filed a petition with the Florida Public Service Commission to request approval to acquire a 250 MW coal-fired power plant in Jacksonville. The Cedar Bay Generating Plant has supplied power to FPL since 1988 through a long-term power purchase agreement. FPL plans to spend $520.5 million to buy the plant from CBAS Power Holdings LLC, which is an affiliate of Pacific Gas & Electric. If approved, FPL said it would reduce plant operations by 90% and then decommission the plant within two to three years.
