PSC Approves Plan for FPL to Purchase Coal Plant

The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a settlement agreement between Florida Power & Light (FPL) and the Office of Public Counsel that would allow FPL to purchase and close the Cedar Bay Generating Plant. FPL announced in March that it planned to buy the coal-fired power plant for $520.5 million and then close the facility at the end of 2016. FPL entered into a long-term contract in 1988 to purchase power from the plant, but the utility said it can now generate electricity at a lower cost. Under the agreement, FPL must increase an environmental liability insurance policy from $20 million to $40 million. The settlement also reduced the amount customers will pay for the plant this year and in 2016 by approximately $30 million.
