INDUSTRY NEWS

PSC Staff Recommends Approval of New FPL Plant

The Florida Public Service Commission’s (PSC) staff last week recommended approval of Florida Power & Light’s (FPL) request for an exemption on its proposed 1,163 MW natural gas plant in Dania Beach. The exemption would waive the required Request for Proposal process, which is intended to verify the most cost-effective option. The PSC staff pointed to FPL’s proposal to use existing infrastructure as a factor in the recommendation. The PSC will consider the recommendation during its meeting on July 13. If the exemption is approved, FPL will still need other regulatory approvals before beginning construction on the project, which is estimated to be in service by June 2022.

Berkshire Hathaway to Acquire Texas Utility Over NextEra

Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is nearing a deal to purchase Texas-based Oncor Electric Delivery for $9 billion. This follows the Public Utility Commission of Texas’ (PUCT) denial on June 29 of NextEra Energy Inc.’s motion to re-consider an $18.7 billion offer to acquire Oncor. NextEra is the parent company of Florida Power & Light. Regulators said the NextEra deal was not in the public interest. Berkshire Hathaway’s acquisition would also need approval from PUCT.

Application Deadline Set for PSC Seats

Candidates seeking to replace Jimmy Patronis on the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) have until July 28 at 5 p.m. to submit an application. Patronis was swo in as the state’s chief financial officer on June 30.The commission is also accepting applications through July 18 at 5 p.m. to fill Ronald Brise and Art Graham’s seats following the expiration of their terms. Both Brise and Graham have notified the nominating council that they will seek reappointment.
