FMPA’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee elected 2017-2018 officers last Wednesday. The Board re-elected Bill Conrad, Newberry, as Chairman, Barbara Quiñones, Homestead, as Vice Chairman, Larry Matte, Kissimmee, as Treasurer, and Lynne Tejeda, Key West, as Secretary. Board of Directors
The Board of Directors met last Wednesday and approved: 1) the Florida Mutual Aid agreement, 2) extension to the St. Lucie Nuclear Reliability Exchange agreement, and 3) recommendation from the Nominating Committee for slate of Board Officers for the 2017-2018 term. The Executive Committee met last Wednesday and approved: 1) the post issuance report on the All-Requirements Series 2017A and 2017B bonds, 2) discussion with the city of Vero Beach and Florida Power & Light on sale timeline and coordination, and 3) election of Executive Committee officers. Policy Makers Liaisons Committee
FMPA’s Policy Makers Liaisons Committee met last Thursday and elected Mike Perri, Fort Pierce, as Chair, and Kathleen Thacker, Kissimmee, as Vice Chair. 3 Phase Times
FMPA’s Power Resources Division published the June 2017 edition of 3 Phase Times last week. This monthly report provides information about the All-Requirements Project’s (ARP) system peak, hourly loads, resource fuel mix, natural gas usage, natural gas pricing and more performance information. The report shows that natural gas represented 82% of ARP’s total energy sources in June. ARP sold 46,928 MWh to the Florida Municipal Power Pool (FMPP) at an average price of $22.59 per MWh. The FMPP Average Monthly Gas Dispatch Price in June was $3.33 per MMBtu, which was seven cents more than forecasted. FMPA’s independent auditors, Purvis, Gray and Company, will be at FMPA’s Orlando office beginning Monday to conduct the interim audit. The audit helps prepare for FMPA’s annual financial audit, which takes place after the close of the fiscal year. The auditors will review financial information for the Agency and FMPA’s power supply projects. Contact: Rick Minch
FMPA, Vero Beach & FPL Meeting
FMPA staff will meet with representatives from Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Vero Beach on Tuesday to discuss the process and schedule for selling Vero Beach’s electric utility. Contact: Jacob Williams
Florida Mutual Aid Assistance Workshop
All electric utilities in Florida are invited to participate in an inaugural Florida Mutual Aid Assistance Workshop on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pines in Windermere, Fla. The free event, hosted by Orlando Utilities Commission, is being held to strengthen preparations and coordination for mutual aid. Each utility’s mutual aid assistance coordinator is invited, as well as other operational personnel deemed appropriate by each utility. It is important for municipal electric utilities to participate in order to demonstrate a commitment to statewide mutual aid coordination. Goveing Board Meetings
FMPA’s goveing boards will meet Aug. 24, one week later than usual, to avoid conflict with the Florida League of Cities Annual Conference scheduled for Aug. 17 in Orlando. FMPA’s meetings will be held in the Orlando office. The Board of Directors will meet at 8:30 a.m., and the Executive Committee will meet at 9 a.m., or immediately following the Board meeting. Excellence as a Supervisor II
The first module of Series II of FMPA’s Excellence as a Supervisor training will be held Sept. 12-13 at FMPA’s Orlando office. The cost for the series is $1,100 per person. This training is designed for first-line supervisors, middle-level supervisors and prospective supervisors. Series II provides information on selection and development of employees, performance evaluations, employee motivation, leading change, as well as an overview of ensuring a harassment-free and respectful workplace. https://fmpa.com/event/excellence-as-a-supervisor-series-ii-5/> style=color: windowtext;>Registration is available on FMPA’s website. PSC Positions Draw 14 Applicants
A total of 14 people filed applications by last Tuesday’s deadline for two seats on the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) that become available this January. The applicants include the incumbents, Ronald Brise and Art Graham, along with 12 others, including Bill Conrad of Newberry and Clay Lindstrom formerly with Fort Pierce Utilities Authority. A Nominating Council will interview applicants and then recommend finalists to Gov. Rick Scott, who will make the appointments to four-year terms. Meanwhile, the council is accepting applications until July 28 for another seat on the PSC that became vacant last month when Scott appointed former Commissioner Jimmy Patronis to the position of Florida’s chief financial officer. The term for Patronis’ seat ends Jan. 1, 2019.
Hurricane Forecasters Revise Expectations Upward for Atlantic Storm Season
Colorado State University (CSU) researchers released an adjusted forecast last week for the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, noting an increased chance of hurricanes. The updated forecast predicts 15 named storms and eight hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. Forecasters attribute the upward trend to a weakened El Nino effect. The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30, has seen four named storms to date. CSU will release its next forecast update in August.
Solar Panel Mandate Approved in South Miami
The city of South Miami approved a measure last week that makes rooftop solar panels mandatory on new residential homes, buildings and apartment complexes. The law requires that 175 square feet of solar panels be installed per 1,000 square feet of roof area. South Miami is the first city in Florida to make rooftop solar panels mandatory. The measure goes into effect Sept. 18.
