LAST WEEK
3 Phase Times
FMPA’s Power Resources Division published the April 2014 edition of 3 Phase Times. This monthly report provides information about the All-Requirements Project’s (ARP) system peak, hourly loads, resource fuel mix, natural gas usage, natural gas pricing and more performance information. The report shows that in April FMPA purchased 2,624 MWh from the Florida Municipal Power Pool and sold 77,404 MWh, resulting in net sales of 74,780 MWh. The short-term forecast estimated 26,767 MWh of net sales. The higher net sales were due to the economic dispatching of FMPA’s gas-fired generating units. To help members prepare, FMPA and the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) will host a Hurricane Preparedness Roundtable on June 12 at 10 a.m. at FMPA’s Orlando office. INDUSTRY NEWS
Forecasters Predict Slow 2014 Hurricane Season
Forecasters predict the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season will be slower-than-normal with eight to 13 named tropical storms and three to six hurricanes. Just one or two major hurricanes with winds over 110 miles per hour are forecast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters said last Thursday that an expected El Nino system will likely reduce the number and intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes. Cooler temperatures on the surface of the Atlantic Ocean compared with recent years will also lower the probability of hurricane formation. The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1.
