OUC Plans to Purchase Osceola Power Plant, Retire Stanton Unit One
The Orlando Utilities Commission’s Board on Tuesday approved moving forward with the purchase of a power plant to mitigate the intermittency of solar power and to retire the 440-megawatt, coal-fired Stanton Unit 1. The Osceola Generating Station is a 510-megawatt single-cycle natural gas-fired power plant located near Harmony and is owned by Texas-based Genova. Last October, OUC announced plans to significantly reduce its reliance on coal by 2025 and to stop using the fossil fuel in 2027. The deal includes OUC paying $61.5 million for the Osceola County power plant and spending $38 million to upgrade the plant’s equipment and connections to the electric grid. FMPA, as a joint owner in Unit 1, supports this decision because it will reduce members costs and reduce emissions.
ARP Telephonic Rate Workshop
The ARP Executive Committee held a rate workshop last Wednesday and reviewed the July All-Requirements Project loads, costs and rates. Despite Participant loads that were 2.4% above budget and total energy sales to others (Pool and third party) that were 12% above budget, monthly gas costs that were 30% above budget drove total Participant $/MWh costs for July to be 7.5% above budget. The July average billed demand and energy cost to Participants was $62.62 per MWh. The full agenda package is available on the Portal.
Power Generation Fleet Workshop
Representatives from FMPA, Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, Keys Energy Services and Kissimmee Utility Authority will meet on Wednesday at 9 a.m. via Teams to discuss ways to maximize the performance of FMPA’s power generation fleet. Discussion topics will include operational performance, power pool coordination, fleet synergies and other power generation issues. Contact: Ken Rutter
Safety Training
Mike McCleary visits Newberry on Wednesday to provide a training program on a safety topic requested by the city. Mike and other members of FMPA Member Services Department are available to provide individualized training for members that help improve safety, reliability, or operations. Several programs have been presented in the past that address city-specific needs. Interested members can contact Mike for assistance.
Finance Committee

Safety Compliance Workshop
FMPA hosts the fifth session of the Safety Compliance for Electric Utilities Distance Learning Series on Friday at 1 p.m. via teleconference. The session will highlight the importance of assessing work with potential electric arc exposures and developing effective controls for personal protection. Contact: Sharon Samuels
