2023 Energy Industry Prognosis

January All-Requirements Project Rates
The average billed demand and energy cost for FMPA’s All-Requirements Project in January was $98.39 per megawatt hour, which was $20.08 less than in December. The lower costs were due to FMPA’s average natural gas costs, which averaged $4.30 per metric million British thermal unit and were 47% below budget. Utility Salary Survey
FMPA’s annual utility salary survey was emailed to members last week. The results will provide members with Florida-specific salary and benefit information for positions in public power. The deadline to complete the survey is March 14. Contact: Sharon Adams
Strategic Planning Session
FMPA’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee met last Wednesday at FMPA’s Orlando office for their biennial strategic planning session. The Board of Directors ranked their top eight strategic priorities, and the Executive Committee ranked their top six strategic priorities. A full report including the poll results will be shared with members, and the priorities will be presented as information items in March. The agenda package is available on the Portal. FMPA’s Board of Directors met last Thursday and approved three action items, including: 1) distribution of funds from the termination of the Poinsett Solar Energy Center, 2) changes to the Debt Risk Management Policy, and 3) financial advisor contracts with PFM and Dunlap & Associates. Executive Committee
FMPA’s Executive Committee met last Thursday and approved three action items, including: 1) distribution of funds from the termination of the Poinsett Solar Energy Center, 2) recommended changes to the Debt Risk Management Policy, and 3) financial advisor contracts with PFM and Dunlap & Associates. The Committee agreed to table the discussion of reimbursement to OUC for expenses related to the Harmony Solar Energy Center interconnection until March. POWERGEN Tours Cane Island Power Park
A group of attendees from the POWERGEN International Conference will tour Cane Island Power Park on Monday. The group will observe plant operations and learn about its award-winning performance. Regional Crew Leader Roundtables
FMPA hosts a crew leader roundtable in Bartow on Tuesday, a roundtable in Mount Dora on Wednesday and a roundtable in Homestead on Thursday. Last week’s issue of FMPA Weekly reported the wrong dates. POWERGEN Presentation
Ken Rutter and Cane Island Power Park assistant plant manager Bill Mangan will present at the POWERGEN International Conference on Wednesday in Orlando. The presentation will highlight the management of the power plant and upgrades performed on Unit 3.
Black History Month Presentation
Jacob Williams and his wife, Cyd Charisse, are visiting students at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School in Fort Pierce on Tuesday to participate in a Black History Month presentation. Jacob and Cyd Charisse will share their experiences growing up during the civil rights movement and discuss African Americans who influenced and inspired them.
Solar Phase III Meeting
FMPA holds a workshop on March 15 at 10 a.m. via Teams for members interested in participating in Phase III of the Florida Municipal Solar Project. Sue Utley emailed a calendar invite with details last Thursday. Contact: Susan Schumann
Foreman Academy Certification Series
FMPA hosts the first track of the three-part Foreman Academy Certification series on March 20-23 at its Orlando office. The Foreman Academy Certification provides crew leaders and general foremen with the knowledge and tools to lead crews efficiently, responsibly and safely. The deadline to register is March 10. NERC Standard eSMART Demonstration
FMPA hosts a demonstration of MinMax’s eSmart tool on April 4 at 10 a.m. at FMPA’s Orlando office. The asset management, inspection, and meter exchange tool is designed to help utilities comply with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s PRC-005-6 standard. MinMax will be available after the training to speak with utilities. Space for the event is limited. The deadline to register is March 25. Contact: LaKenya VanNorman
