Hurricane Isaias
Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin as a Category 2 hurricane early last Saturday morning. The storm – which is the first hurricane of the Atlantic season – had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, and it weakened just below major hurricane status before making landfall and wind speeds decreased continually as it moved. According to reports, nearly 900,000 customers across Florida and Alabama were without power within hours of Hurricane Isaias’ landfall. However, Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) reported that Florida public power utilities restored power to more than 38,000 customers within 24 hours. Additional Florida public power crews answered the call for mutual aid throughout both states, specifically assisting Florida’s co-op electric utilities and Alabama’s municipal electric utilities. An estimated 146,000 customers in Florida are still without power, and crews are hard at work across the area to restore power completely.
