The average billed demand and energy cost for FMPA’s All-Requirements Project in March was $98.58, which was $3.70 less than in February. The lower costs were due to FMPA’s average natural gas costs being less than the previous month and energy sales being 5% above budget. With lower natural gas prices, natural gas generation in March was 3% above budget, and coal-fired generation was 26% below budget. April 17 marks just 45 days until the start of the 2023 hurricane season, and forecasters are calling for more uncertainty than previous years. This is due to a developing El Niño and already warm water temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean. Colorado State University researchers forecast a slightly below-average hurricane season, while The Weather Channel predicts an above-average season. An average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes of a Category 3 or higher. To help Florida’s public power utilities prepare, the Florida Municipal Electric Association is hosting a statewide mutual aid and storm response tabletop exercise on May 17 at the Renaissance Orlando Airport Hotel. The exercise is part of the Hurricane and Storm Preparedness Forum on May 18. Registration is available on FMEA’s website .
