JEA officially joined FMPA last Thursday. This means all 33 municipal electric utilities in the state are now members of FMPA. The partnership enables the utilities to maximize its efforts in providing customers affordable, reliable and clean power.
Join us in congratulating several members of FMPA’s power generation team. Jay Butters joins FMPA on Monday as Generation Operations Director. He is retiring from KUA after 39 years, having served as Cane Island Power Park Plant Manager for the last 14. He will oversee the integration of the three new power plants joining the FMPA fleet. Longtime Kissimmee Utility Authority employee and former Assistant Plant Manager Jason Terry has been named the new Plant Manager of Cane Island. Paul Braunfelt is the new Director of Generation for Keys Energy Services and will be the Stock Island Generating Facility Plant Manager. Paul was hired by FMPA seven months ago as a Power Generation Engineer at Stock Island. Ed Leongomez has announced his retirement from the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority after 27 years of service, including Plant Manager of the Treasure Coast Energy Center since 2008. We wish him well on his retirement.
FMPA’s Policy Makers Liaisons Committee met last Wednesday and heard five information items, including: 1) review of FMPA’s strategic plan, 2) energy market and regulatory update, 3) Florida Municipal Solar Project update, 4) power plant acquisition update, and 5) Florida state legislative update and opportunities for utility boards and governing bodies. FMPA’s Finance Committee met last Wednesday and approved updates to the Procurement Policy. The committee also heard four information items, including: 1) review of fiscal 2024 Agency budget, 2) review of Risk Policy compliance reports, 3) update on the investment of St. Lucie decommissioning funds, and 4) fiscal 2023 budget status through February. FMPA’s Board of Directors met last Thursday and approved three action items, including: 1) JEA joining FMPA, 2) 2023 Strategic Plan priorities, and 3) appointment of the Nominating Committee. FMPA’s Executive Committee met last Thursday and approved to reinstate the All-Requirements Project contract with Starke. The committee also heard four information items, including: 1) FMPA generation integration update, 2) update on generation and power sales through early April, 3) Human Resources Department quarterly update, and 4) Florida Municipal Solar Project expansion update and recommendation. FMPA’s Board of Directors met last Thursday and appointed three members to the Nominating Committee to identify and recommend Board of Directors officers for 2023-2024. The committee is comprised of three directors representing member utilities based on electric sales: Howard McKinnon from the Town of Havana representing small utilities, Lynne Mila from the City of Clewiston representing medium-sized utilities and Doug Peebles from Ocala Electric Utility representing large utilities. The slate of officers for the upcoming year will be presented and voted on at the July Board meeting.
FMEA and FMPA host a Human Resources Roundtable on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at FMPA’s Orlando office. The roundtable will provide a forum for Florida public power employees interested in HR-related topics to exchange information including best practices, policies, procedures, legal considerations and other relevant issues.
